His career trajectory shifted in 1969 when he joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he was the project director of the SLV-III, India’s first self-developed satellite launch vehicle. This project was a notable achievement in India’s space exploration history.
In 1982, Kalam returned to the DRDO and played a pivotal role in developing various missiles, most notably the Agni, India’s first intermediate-range ballistic missile, launched in 1989. The Agni missile combined technology from the SLV-III with other innovative approaches. Kalam’s influential leadership in these missile projects earned him the nickname “Missile Man,” highlighting his significant contribution to enhancing India’s defense capabilities.
